Replacement Filters and Parts For Berkey Systems
Replacement Parts For Berkey Water Filters
Berkey Filter Replacement:
The Berkey water filters are so powerful that they are classified as purifiers.
Replacing filters is easy and only takes a minute to install, yet these filters will last a long time for thousands of gallons.
The Black Berkey Filters, Sport Berkey Filters, and Fluoride Removal Filters are all made in the USA.
Overview for Replacements
The best way to gauge when to replace:
1) Keep track of how many times per week you need to refill your system.
2) Then multiply that figure times the capacity in gallons of your particular system (for example, the Royal Berkey system is 3.25 gallons) to determine the Total Gallons Used Per Week.
3) Finally, divide the Total Gallons Used Per Week into the max gallons, telling you how many weeks before the filters should be replaced.
- The max gallons for a pair of Black Elements: 6,000 Gallons.
- The max gallons for 4 Black Elements: 12,000 Gallons.
- The max gallons for a pair of PF-2 Filters: 1,000 Gallons
- The max gallons for 4 PF-2 Filters: 2,000 Gallons
For instance, the Royal Berkey system is about 3.25 gallons. A pair of PF-2 filters should be replaced after (1,000/3.25) or 307 refills.
4) Next, calculate the future date for replacement (52 weeks per year), write that date on a sticker, and attach it to the bottom of your system for future reference.
Black Berkey Elements
The Black Berkey elements are the finest gravity-fed water purification filter available anywhere, composed of a proprietary formulation of more than six different media types, all constructed into a very compact matrix containing millions of microscopic pores. It removes not only bacteria and parasites but also viruses. The Black Berkey Purification Elements are sold as a set of two and can be used to upgrade most gravity-fed water filter systems, they are re-cleanable and self-sterilizing, and they come with a 2-year, prorated warranty.
Berkey Fluoride and Arsenic Removal Water Filter (PF-2 & PF-4)
The Berkey Fluoride and Arsenic Removal Water Filters are designed for use in conjunction with the Black Berkey water filters to adsorb Fluoride, Arsenic, and other residual heavy metal ions. The Filter Media is a new and improved high-yield aluminum oxide especially formulated for removing fluoride and arsenic from drinking water, made from safe, non-leaching Polypropolene #5 that is BPA-free.
*If you have Black Berkey Element Filters(regular filters come with the unit), you need to get PF-2.
*If you have Berkey Earth Filters or White Ceramic Filters(Super Sterasy), you need to get PF-4.
If the Berkey Post Filter elements are not purged before use, the possibility of turbidity in the first few cycles of water may occur. For the sake of simplicity, turbidity appears as cloudiness in the water. In other words, the process of dust/fines causes cloudiness.
For example, NMCL had the post-filter elements tested to determine at what level the turbidity falls off. The results were as expected and are available here.
The laboratory tested the turbidity remaining after purging the Berkey Post Filter elements (as described in the assembly instructions). The results show that turbidity levels drop off dramatically if the purging process is followed. It is recommended that the post-filter elements be purged for approximately 30 seconds on both ends before installation. It may be necessary to repeat this purging process up to ten times to remove all the process dust before installation.
Our lab tests determined that the turbidity drops off as follows:
One Purging: Turbidity reduced by >94%
Two Purging’s: Turbidity reduced by >96%
Three Purging’s: Turbidity reduced by >98%
The turbidity will continue to decline with each refill cycle of your Berkey system. While turbidity may be aesthetically unpleasing, according to current research, there are no negative health effects with which to be concerned.
The Ceramic Filter Super Sterasyl has been in continual use since 1827. These filters can be used for all Berkey systems or British Berkefeld systems. It contains granulated activated carbon to reduce chemical and organic compounds.
Sport Berkey Replacement Filter
The Sport Berkey Replacement Filter uses the same filtration medium as the large Berkey systems and is designed to remove or dramatically reduce toxic chemicals, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, trihalomethanes, detergents, pesticides, herbicides, chlorides, pharmaceuticals, petroleum-based products, unpleasant tastes and odor, silt, sediment, and chlorine.

Why Are Black Berkey Water Filter Elements so Good?
Berkey filters have used powerful and advanced filters called the Black Berkey Filter Elements. These filters are used in all their systems, which takes their water filtration to the next level. Black Berkey filters are one of the most efficient filters in the market. EPA-approved laboratories tested it, and the results have significantly raised the standard for the water filter industry.
With Berkey Black Filter, you can be assured that your water is clean and safe for consumption. Black Berkey Filter Elements are far more powerful compared to other water filters. Tests have shown that Black Berkey Filter Elements reduce 100% of pathogens in water. You will not detect any pathogen after using the Black Berkey filters.
The Black Berkey filter element had extensive testing at the state and exceeded the protocol of different laboratories. The University of Phoenix, Spectrum Labs, and the Toxicology and Environmental Science Department at Louisiana University also tested it. With all these laboratory tests done, Black Berkey filter elements are 100% effective in bringing optimum results to water purification.
One Of A Kind
The unique Black Berkey elements combine the age-old process of microporous filtration coupled with modern state-of-the-art technology and the highest quality materials to bring you the finest water purification system available anywhere. Berkey uses very small micro-pores within the self-sterilizing and re-cleanable Black Berkey Purification Elements. In this way, pathogenic bacteria cannot simply pass through them.
Indeed Black Berkey Filter Elements are one of a kind. You cannot find the same result in purifying water among other competitors. Berkey made an outstanding invention that helps all people. With this new technology, purifying water that is very safe for use and drinking won't be a problem. Many customers have tried other products but failed to remove the contaminants in the water.
Looking at the laboratory testing records, only Berkey exceeds the standard limitation given to a particular water filter. Berkey has set the standard for all water filters to surpass. Black Berkey Filter elements became a leader in gravity-fed water purification.
It lasts long before it needs a replacement when it comes to durability. Two elements in a Berkey system will purify approximately 6,000 gallons of water before a replacement is recommended. You can clean it again and again when needed, and it sterilizes itself during the element's life. Lastly, elements come with a 2-year pro-rated warranty.
What are Berkey Fluoride Removal Water Filters?
Berkey PF-2 fluoride reduction elements are designed for use in conjunction with Black Berkey Purification Elements to adsorb the following unwanted contaminants found in drinking water:
• Fluoride
• Arsenic V and pre-oxidized Arsenic III
• Other residual heavy metal ions
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, less than 50 ppb effluent concentrations were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).
ARSENIC: This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions and arsenic cations.
REPLACEMENT:
Under normal conditions, it is recommended that each set of two Berkey PF-2 Elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters). The Royal Berkey system is about 3.25 gallons (12.3 liters) therefore, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced after 1,000/3.25 (3,785/12.3) or 307 refills. If the system is refilled about one time per day, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced after 10 months; if the system is refilled about twice per day, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced about every five months). Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.
Notes:
1) Do not boil this element.
2) Berkey PF-2 Elements reduce filtration flow rate by 15-20%.
3) When the lower reservoir is full of water, the Berkey PF-2 Elements will be immersed.
4) When the water level in the lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements, it is normal for small amounts of water to burp through threads connecting Berkey PF-2 elements to Black Berkey Purification Elements.
6) If/when you conduct the “Red Food Color Test” for the Black Berkey Purification Elements, you must first remove the Berkey PF-2 Elements. Failure to do so may result in the Berkey PF-2 Element’s warranty voiding.
7) The lower reservoir in most gravity purification systems has a two to three-gallon capacity, and a typical household uses about one refill per day. We recommend that the upper reservoir be filled at night. The water from the upper reservoir should be purified by morning. It is normal for the purification process to slow down significantly when the water level in the lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements. Households requiring more water can speed up the flow rate by drawing off the purified water into a water pitcher or other container when the water level in the lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements.
*For maximum removal efficiency, maintain the treated water between a PH level above 5 and below 7.
Actual capacity depends on the level of contamination of arsenic, fluoride, and other competing heavy metal ions. Unusually high levels of these contaminants may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements.
