Berkey PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements
Berkey PF-2™ Elements are optional post-filters designed specifically for use with Black Berkey® Elements, or in lieu of Black Berkey® Elements Replacement Filters, the new Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition. They attach beneath the primary elements in the lower chamber and provide dedicated reduction of fluoride, arsenic, and other residual heavy-metal ions.
What the PF-2 Elements Reduce
The proprietary activated-alumina media is designed to adsorb:
- Fluoride compounds, including sodium fluoride, sodium fluorosilicate, and fluorosilicic acid
- Arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III
- Other residual heavy-metal ions
Installation and Compatibility
Install one PF-2 Element for every Black Berkey® Element in the upper chamber. A system using two Black Berkey® Elements requires two PF-2 Elements; a system using four primary elements requires four PF-2 Elements.
PF-2 Elements may be used with compatible full-size Berkey systems, including:
- Travel Berkey® Water Filter
- Big Berkey® Water Filter
- Royal Berkey® Water Filter
- Imperial Berkey®, Crown Berkey®, and Berkey Light® systems when configured with compatible Black Berkey® Elements
Prime and install the PF-2 Elements according to the instructions included with the product. After installation, discard the first full batch of filtered water to flush any remaining media dust.
Replacement Schedule
Under normal conditions, replace each pair of PF-2 Elements after approximately 1,000 gallons or 1 year, whichever comes first. Actual service life may be shorter when the source water contains high concentrations of fluoride, arsenic, or competing dissolved substances.
Estimating Replacement by Daily Use

These estimates are based on total filtered water use, not simply on the listed capacity of the lower chamber.
Performance and Operating Conditions
- PF-2 Elements may reduce the system’s filtration flow rate by approximately 15%–20%.
- For maximum fluoride-reduction efficiency, the manufacturer recommends source water with a pH between 5 and 7.
- The housing is made from BPA-free, non-leaching polypropylene #5.
- PF-2 Elements are covered by a six-month limited warranty, subject to the manufacturer’s warranty terms.
Care and Important Precautions
- Do not boil, freeze, or expose the elements to excessive heat.
- Remove PF-2 Elements before performing a red food coloring test.
- Do not use filters that are damaged, improperly stored, or beyond their recommended service life.
- Used filter elements cannot be returned or resold for sanitary reasons.
For temporary storage, follow the current instructions supplied with the filters. Do not rely on older storage directions that may conflict with the manufacturer’s latest guidance.
