Berkey Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Water Filter PF-2 (Set of 2)
Berkey PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements
Berkey PF-2™ Elements are optional post-filters that attach beneath compatible primary filter elements in the lower chamber. The current manufacturer PF-2 instructions describe use with Black Berkey® Elements, while current Phoenix Gravity product guidance also supports PF-2 compatibility with Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements.
PF-2 Elements do not replace the primary filter elements. Use one PF-2 Element for each compatible primary element installed.
What the PF-2 Elements Reduce
The proprietary activated-alumina media is designed for reduction of:
- Fluoride compounds, including sodium fluoride, sodium fluorosilicate, and fluorosilicic acid
- Arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III
- Other residual heavy-metal ions
Performance depends on source-water chemistry, pH, contaminant concentration, competing ions, flow, installation, and filter condition.
Manufacturer Fluoride Performance Context
The current PF-2 manufacturer instructions describe fluoride testing using challenge water containing approximately 20–30 ppm fluoride.
| Condition | Manufacturer-Reported Context |
|---|---|
| Typical performance | Effluent below 1 ppm, corresponding to greater than 95% reduction under the described conditions |
| Optimum conditions | Effluent below 50 ppb, corresponding to greater than 99.75% reduction under the described conditions |
| Recommended pH for maximum efficiency | Approximately pH 5–7 |
Installation and Compatibility
Install one PF-2 Element for each compatible primary filter element used in the upper chamber. A two-element system uses two PF-2 Elements; a four-element system uses four PF-2 Elements.
With Black Berkey® Elements
The current PF-2 manufacturer instructions describe installation beneath Black Berkey® Elements.
With Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements
Current Phoenix Gravity product guidance supports PF-2 compatibility with Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements. Follow the current Phoenix-specific instructions and compatibility guidance for your system.
PF-2 Elements may be used with supported full-size Berkey® systems when configured with compatible primary elements, including:
- Travel Berkey® Water Filter
- Big Berkey® Water Filter
- Royal Berkey® Water Filter
- Imperial Berkey®, Crown Berkey®, and Berkey Light® systems when configured with compatible primary elements
Prime and install PF-2 Elements according to the current instructions supplied with the product and the primary filter elements installed.
Replacement Schedule
Under normal conditions, the manufacturer states that a pair of PF-2 Elements should be replaced after approximately 1,000 gallons. As conservative retail guidance, replacing at about 1 year or 1,000 gallons, whichever comes first, is appropriate for typical household use.
Actual service life may be shorter when source water contains high concentrations of fluoride, arsenic, or competing dissolved substances.
Estimating Replacement by Daily Use
| 2 gallons per day | About 500 days by volume; use the one-year replacement guidance |
|---|---|
| 3 gallons per day | About 333 days |
| 4.5 gallons per day | About 222 days, or roughly 7 months |
| 6 gallons per day | About 167 days, or roughly 5½ months |
These estimates are based on total filtered water use, not simply on the capacity of the lower chamber.
Performance and Operating Conditions
- PF-2 Elements may reduce system flow rate by approximately 15%–20%.
- Maximum fluoride-reduction efficiency is associated with source water around pH 5–7.
- The housing is made of BPA-free polypropylene (#5).
- PF-2 Elements carry a six-month limited warranty, subject to the manufacturer's current warranty terms.
Care and Important Precautions
- Do not boil the PF-2 Elements.
- Use cold water when preparing or purging the filters, following the current manufacturer instructions.
- Remove PF-2 Elements before performing a red food-coloring test on Black Berkey® Elements.
- Do not use elements that are damaged or beyond their recommended service guidance.
- Used filter elements cannot be returned or resold for sanitary reasons.
For storage or extended periods of non-use, follow the latest instructions supplied with the filters rather than relying on older storage directions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do PF-2 Elements replace the main Berkey® filter elements?
No. PF-2 Elements are post-filters. They attach beneath compatible primary filter elements and are not used on their own.
Can PF-2 Elements be used with Black Berkey® Elements?
Yes. The current PF-2 manufacturer instructions specifically describe use with Black Berkey® Elements.
Can PF-2 Elements be used with Phoenix Gravity elements?
Current Phoenix Gravity product guidance supports PF-2 compatibility with Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements. Follow the current Phoenix-specific compatibility and installation guidance for your system.
How many PF-2 Elements do I need?
Use one PF-2 Element for each compatible primary filter element installed. A system with two primary elements uses two PF-2 Elements.
How often should PF-2 Elements be replaced?
The manufacturer states that approximately 1,000 gallons can be used under normal conditions. As conservative household guidance, replace at about one year or 1,000 gallons, whichever comes first.
Do PF-2 Elements reduce flow rate?
Yes. The manufacturer indicates that PF-2 Elements may reduce overall system flow rate by approximately 15%–20%.
What pH works best for fluoride reduction?
The manufacturer indicates maximum fluoride-reduction efficiency around pH 5–7. Performance can vary outside that range and with source-water chemistry.
Should PF-2 Elements be removed for the red food-coloring test?
Yes. Remove PF-2 Elements before conducting the Black Berkey® red food-coloring test.
