Big Berkey® Water Filter System – A Powerful, Practical Solution

Whether you’re looking for a dependable home water filter or something you can rely on while traveling, the Big Berkey system offers flexibility and performance in one stainless steel unit. From tap water to well water, even freshwater sources like lakes and rivers, this gravity-fed system is designed to provide clean, great-tasting water without electricity or plumbing.

It’s a straightforward system that’s easy to set up and simple to use. Fill the upper chamber, let gravity do the work, and dispense filtered water from the lower chamber. As the water level drops, the flow rate naturally slows — a normal part of gravity filtration.

Designed for Everyday Living

The Big Berkey is built from durable AISI 304 stainless steel and sized for small to medium households. With a 2.25-gallon capacity, it comfortably serves 1–4 people for daily use, while remaining compact enough to fit neatly on a kitchen counter or under a cabinet.

For convenience, you can install an optional Water View Spigot, which allows you to see the water level in the lower chamber without lifting the lid.

Placement tip: Many families keep their Berkey close to the sink for easy refilling.

Authentic Black Berkey® Elements

Each system includes authentic Black Berkey® Elements, identifiable by the laser-etched Berkey® logo. These elements are trusted worldwide by families, missionaries, relief organizations, and preparedness-minded households.

They are:

  • Made to high manufacturing standards

  • Re-cleanable for extended life

  • Rated for approximately 3,000 gallons per element

  • Expandable up to 4 elements in the Big Berkey® system

Two elements can filter up to 6,000 gallons before replacement is recommended. For many households, that translates to years of reliable service at just pennies per gallon.

How the Big Berkey® Works

The system uses a combination of microfiltration and adsorption.

Black Berkey Elements (Upper Chamber)

  • Sub-micron pore structure helps trap bacteria, cysts, and sediment

  • Reduces heavy metals such as lead and mercury

  • Reduces chlorine, trihalomethanes, VOCs, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues

  • Designed to retain beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium

Optional PF-2™ Fluoride & Arsenic Filters (Lower Chamber)

  • Thread directly onto Black Berkey® Elements

  • Provide enhanced reduction of fluoride, arsenic, and nitrates

  • Use coconut-shell-derived adsorption media

This dual-stage approach allows you to customize your filtration based on your local water conditions.

Flow Rate & Performance

Flow rate depends on the number of installed elements:

  • 2 Elements: Up to 3.5 gallons per hour

  • 4 Elements: Up to 7 gallons per hour

Flow rate is calculated with the upper chamber full and decreases as the water level drops.

The ability to expand to four elements makes the Big Berkey® adaptable — use two for everyday efficiency, or four to increase output for larger households or high-demand situations.

Made for the Extreme, Used Every Day

Berkey systems are designed to function in challenging environments, but most owners use them daily in the kitchen. From morning coffee to filling reusable bottles, it’s a practical way to improve water quality while reducing reliance on single-use plastic.

Because it runs on gravity alone, the Big Berkey remains functional during:

  • Power outages

  • Boil advisories

  • Natural disasters

  • Grid-down situations

Simple Setup & Maintenance

  1. Prime the elements under cool running water.

  2. Install using the included wing nuts (no tools required).

  3. Fill the upper chamber and allow gravity to filter.

  4. Periodically clean the elements with a Scotch-Brite™ pad to restore flow.

When cleaning no longer restores flow effectively, it’s time to replace the elements — typically after years of use for most households.

Comparing to Typical Pitcher Filters

Big Berkey® System

  • Reduces 200+ potential contaminants

  • ~3,000 gallons per element

  • Up to 7 gallons per hour (with 4 elements)

  • Stainless steel housing

Typical Plastic Pitcher

I never liked drinking water until I tried Berkey water at a friend’s house. The first sip honestly surprised me, it felt like drinking air. It went down so smoothly, and almost immediately I felt like my body was actually absorbing it. Since then, I crave Berkey water because it simply makes me feel good.

My skin looks better, my energy is up, and my body feels like it’s functioning the way it’s supposed to. I didn’t realize how dehydrated I had been until now. Berkey water is just easy to drink, and because of that, I’m finally staying optimally hydrated. I’m sleeping better, waking up well-rested, and feeling genuinely refreshed. That feeling is priceless.

Love it!

It’s great ! I feel better drinking something safe and the water taste clean!!

I should have gone bigger

First, I am thrilled with the Berkey and the benefits of knowing I'm getting clean clean water with no plastic involved.

However, I didn't realise how much water the two of us go through, and, while the Big Berkey works well, I end up filling it up two (sometimes 3) times a day. The fill / flow rate isn't as fast as the old Brita was but I trust the Berkey more.

What do we use the Berkey for that we use so much: coffee machine, kettle, cat water, ice machine, some cooking

Definitely recommend for all good reasons.

Great investment

My daughter researched the Berkey and when she told me all that it filters out I knew I needed to buy one. Because of all the plastics in our water supply I've been buying bottled water; which really is an oxymoron. No longer do I need to tote heavy gallons of water or spend money every week on bottled water. This is one if the best investments I have recently made. Thank you for a great product!

John Winzeler (Wauseon, US)
Great unit!!

We love our Big Berkey. The only thing I would do differently would be to buy the next size bigger. Love, love, live the Berkey system. No more buying water.

Wedding gift for daughter

We’ve had ours for about 2 years. My daughter is getting married in September and she only wanted us to get her a Berkey for her wedding gift in her new house. She and her fiancee love ours so of course I bought them their own!

E
Eduardo Gomez (Tallahassee, US)
Excellent choice

Pristine water coming out of the filter each time is life changing. Excellent choice for the family.
-I had an issue with the air gap system that I solved with a stainless steel flat washer bent like a “U” shape placed
In the upper chamber. Checked.
The equipment needs a visible gauge.

J
Jennifer Maynard (Davisburg, US)
Enjoying the clean water from my Berkey filter

I have used my Berkey for over 30 days. I am enjoying the clean water that I can filter straight from my faucet. I also use it for my dogs to prevent parasites and metals going into our bodies. My
only complaint is that there isn’t a clear bar on the side to tell me my water level. And found the hard way that you can’t overfill the top to keep it full without it spilling all over the countertop.

C
Cris (Liberty Lake, US)
Great tasting water

I only encountered one problem with my Berkey. I over filled it and it leaked out water. There is no gauge to determine if you can add water and how much. You have to lift up the top reservoir and look in the bottom reservoir to estimate how much water to add.

E
Evan Copeland (The Bronx, US)
Sooo gooood!

Notice an enormous difference in water quality and fits perfectly on the counter! Will have this system for a lifetime!
