About Black Berkey® Elements

Black Berkey® Elements are designed for gravity-fed filtration. Water placed in the upper chamber passes through the elements and collects in the lower chamber for convenient daily use.

These elements use a proprietary blend of media in a dense filter matrix. The design creates a long contact time as water moves through the element, which supports the filtration process and helps improve drinking water taste and quality.

Black Berkey® Elements have been tested by independent third-party laboratories for their ability to reduce many common substances that may be found in drinking water. For the most accurate and current information, customers should review the manufacturer’s official test data and product documentation.

Substances Addressed in Third-Party Testing

According to manufacturer-provided testing information, Black Berkey® Elements have been tested for reduction of a broad range of substances commonly discussed in drinking water quality, including:

  • Chlorine
  • Chloramines
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Arsenic
  • Iron
  • Trihalomethanes, also known as THMs
  • Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs
  • Pharmaceutical compounds
  • Petroleum-related compounds
  • Perfluorinated chemicals
  • Rust, silt, and sediment
  • Selected radiological contaminants
  • Bisphenol A, also known as BPA
  • Atrazine

Actual performance can vary based on water quality, setup, usage, maintenance, and the condition of the element. Replace and maintain elements according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Filter Lifespan

Each Black Berkey® Element is designed to filter approximately 3,000 gallons of water before replacement is recommended. A system using two elements can filter approximately 6,000 gallons total before replacement is recommended.

Filter life may vary depending on source water quality, frequency of use, cleaning, storage conditions, and maintenance habits. Slower flow can indicate that the elements may need cleaning or replacement.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Black Berkey® Elements are re-cleanable during their service life. If the flow rate slows, the elements may be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions and reinstalled after proper rinsing and priming.

Always handle elements with clean hands and avoid using soaps, detergents, or harsh cleaning products on the filter media unless the manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise.

Priming the Elements

Black Berkey® Elements require priming before first use. Priming helps prepare the filter media so water can pass through properly.

The included priming button is used with water pressure to help clear trapped air from the element's tiny pores. Follow the manufacturer’s priming instructions before installing the elements in your Berkey® system.

If your elements are not properly primed, the system may filter very slowly or may not filter as expected.

Important Use Notes

  • Do not use Black Berkey® Elements with saltwater.
  • Do not use Black Berkey® Elements with softened water, as this may shorten filter life and affect warranty coverage.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for priming, installation, cleaning, storage, and replacement.
  • Use only compatible parts and accessories designed for your Berkey® system.

Return Notice

Filters that have already been used are not eligible for return or refund because they cannot be resold for health and safety reasons.

Where do the elements install?

Do the elements need to be primed?

Yes. Black Berkey® Elements should be primed before first use. Proper priming helps water flow through the filter media correctly.

Are Black Berkey® Elements recyclable?

The outer shell is made of polypropylene, commonly identified as Recycle Code 5. However, used filter elements are not typically recommended for household recycling because the internal media would need to be separated from the shell and may contain captured substances from use.

Filters

These filters are the only part I need to get my Berkey up and running again. I don’t understand what is taking so long to restock them. Please give an update on availability if possible. My name has been on the wait list for at least one year. Thank you for such a wonderful water purification system.

Had my Berkey for 10 years now

I love my Berkey water filtering system. I won’t drink water that hasn’t been filtered. People call me a water snob when I always bring my own water 😃 I haven’t been able to get the replacement filters and see other companys selling similar filters on line. I’m glad I really stocked up years ago. I haven’t run out yet but wonder why they have been sold out for so long??? I hope I don’t have to resort to a non Berkey company to supply my filters.

Good Product

The product works well but after 2 years of use do you pitch the product in the trash because no replacement filters are available? I am facing that problem now. I have been waiting for filters to become available for over 6 months.

Great water filter, but replacement filters are unavailable.

Great water filter system but if you can not order new filters what good is it? Have I wasted my money on this good filter system only to pitch it in the trash because I can not get new filters for it?

Good News & Bad News

The good news: the Berkey, hands down, makes the BEST tasting water you'll ever have. It has ruined us on drinking water from any other source including our brand new, fancy fridge which supposedly has a of state-of-the-art water filtration system. We are obsessed with our Berkey.

The bad news: the replacement elements always seem to be out of stock which is frustrating to say the least. We have been able to order them on Amazon but at double the price. I understand supply chains are complicated but if the elements are available for those buying a new Berkey unit but not for those wanting to buy replacements, that indicates Berkey is putting a higher value on new customers instead of their loyal, return customers.
