Replacement Filters and Parts For Berkey Systems

Replacement Parts For Berkey Water Filters

Berkey Filter Replacement:

Replacing filters is easy and takes only a minute, yet they will last for thousands of gallons.

The Black Berkey Filters, Sport Berkey Filters, and Fluoride Removal Filters are all made in the USA.

Overview for Replacements

The best way to gauge when to replace:

1) Keep track of how often you need to refill your system each week.

2) Then multiply that figure by the capacity in gallons of your particular system (for example, the Royal Berkey system has a capacity of 3.25 gallons) to determine the Total number of Gallons Used Per Week.

3) Finally, divide the Total Gallons Used Per Week by the maximum number of gallons, telling you how many weeks before the filters should be replaced.

  • The max gallons for a pair of Black Elements: 6,000 Gallons.
  • The max gallons for 4 Black Elements:          12,000 Gallons.
  • The max gallons for a pair of PF-2 Filters:       1,000 Gallons
  • The max gallons for 4 PF-2 Filters:                  2,000 Gallons

For instance, the Royal Berkey system is about 3.25 gallons. A pair of PF-2 filters should be replaced after (1,000/3.25) or 307 refills.

4) Next, calculate the future replacement date (52 weeks per year), write that date on a sticker, and attach it to the bottom of your system for future reference.

Berkey Fluoride and Arsenic Removal Water Filter (PF-2)

Berkey Fluoride Removal Water Filter PF-4Berkey Fluoride Removal Water Filter PF-2 The Berkey Fluoride and Arsenic Removal Water Filters are designed for use with the Black Berkey water filters to adsorb Fluoride, Arsenic, and other residual heavy metal ions. The Filter Media is a new, improved, high-yield aluminum oxide specially formulated to remove fluoride and arsenic from drinking water. It is made from safe, non-leaching polypropylene #5 that is BPA-free.

Please note that purging the Berkey Post Filter elements (PF-2) is necessary.

The media used in our post-filter elements can contain a small amount of harmless process dust or fines, primarily due to their assembly, handling, and shipping. For aesthetic reasons, we recommend purging the Berkey Post-Filter elements at both ends to remove most of the dust generated during this process before installing them in your Berkey system.

If the Berkey Post Filter elements are not purged before use, turbidity may occur in the first few water cycles. For simplicity, turbidity is often described as cloudiness in water. In other words, the process of dust/fines causes cloudiness.

For example, NMCL tested the post-filter elements to determine the level at which turbidity declines.

The laboratory tested the turbidity remaining after purging the Berkey Post Filter elements (as described in the assembly instructions). The results show that turbidity levels drop off dramatically if the purging process is followed.

It is recommended that the post-filter elements be purged for approximately 30 seconds on both ends before installation. This purging process may need to be repeated up to ten times to remove all the process dust.

Our lab tests determined that the turbidity drops off as follows:

One Purging: Turbidity reduced by >94%
Two Purgings: Turbidity reduced by >96%
Three Purgings: Turbidity reduced by >98%

The turbidity of your Berkey system will continue to decline with each subsequent refill cycle. While turbidity may be aesthetically unpleasant, current research indicates that it has no negative health effects.

Why Are Black Berkey Water Filter Elements So Good?

Berkey filters use powerful, advanced Black Berkey Filter Elements across all their systems, elevating water filtration to the next level.

Black Berkey filters are among the most efficient filters available on the market. EPA-approved laboratories tested them, and the results have significantly raised the standard for the water filter industry.

With the Berkey Black Filter, you can be assured that your water is safe for consumption. Black Berkey Filter Elements are significantly more powerful than other water filters.

Black Berkey® Elements dramatically reduce trihalomethanes, inorganic minerals, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, VOCs, petroleum products, perfluorinated chemicals, rust, silt, sediment, radiological, and more.

The Black Berkey filter element has undergone rigorous testing, surpassing the protocols of various laboratories. It has been tested and endorsed by reputable institutions, including the University of Phoenix, Spectrum Labs, and the Toxicology and Environmental Science Department at Louisiana State University.

With these comprehensive laboratory tests, Black Berkey filter elements have been proven to be effective, delivering optimal results in water filtration.

One Of A Kind

The unique Black Berkey elements combine the age-old process of microporous filtration with modern, state-of-the-art technology and the highest-quality materials to create the finest water filtration system available.

Indeed, Black Berkey Filter Elements are one of a kind. You can't get the same results when filtering water as other competitors do. Berkey made an outstanding invention that benefits everyone.

Two elements in a Berkey system will filter approximately 6,000 gallons of water before a replacement is recommended. You can clean it as often as needed throughout its lifetime. Lastly, elements come with a 2-year pro-rated warranty.

What are Berkey Fluoride Removal Water Filters?

Berkey PF-2 fluoride reduction elements are designed for use in conjunction with Black Berkey Elements to adsorb the following unwanted contaminants found in drinking water:

• Fluoride
• Arsenic V and pre-oxidized Arsenic III
• Other residual heavy metal ions

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of <1 ppm fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimal conditions, effluent concentrations below 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).

ARSENIC: This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions and arsenic cations.

REPLACEMENT:
Under normal conditions, it is recommended that each set of two Berkey PF-2 Elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters).

The Royal Berkey system holds approximately 3.25 gallons (12.3 liters); therefore, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced after 1,000/3.25 (307) or 307 refills.

If the system is refilled approximately once a day, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced after 10 months. If the system is refilled about twice a day, the Berkey PF-2 Elements should be replaced every five months.

Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic, and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.

Notes:

1) Do not boil this element.

2) Berkey PF-2 Elements reduce filtration flow rate by 15-20%.

3) When the lower reservoir is full of water, the Berkey PF-2 Elements will be immersed.

4) When the water level in the lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements, it is normal for small amounts of water to burp through the threads connecting the Berkey PF-2 elements to Black Berkey Elements.

6) If/when you conduct the “Red Food Color Test” for the Black Berkey Elements, you must first remove the Berkey  PF-2 Elements. Failure to do so may void the Berkey PF-2 Element’s warranty.

7) The lower reservoir in most gravity filtration systems has a capacity of two to three gallons, and a typical household uses about one refill per day. We recommend filling the upper reservoir at night. The water from the upper reservoir should be filtered in the morning. It is normal for the filtration process to slow down significantly when the water level in the lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements. Households requiring more water can increase the flow rate by drawing filtered water into a pitcher or other container when the water level in the lower reservoir rises above the bottom of the Berkey PF-2 Elements.

For maximum removal efficiency, maintain the treated water at a pH level between 5 and 7.

Actual capacity depends on the level of contamination of arsenic, fluoride, and other competing heavy metal ions. Unusually high levels of these contaminants may reduce the capacity and efficiency of these elements.
