How It Works

Water flows naturally through a dense, micro-porous structure made of activated coconut shell carbon. Millions of tiny pores create a tortuous path that traps:

  • Sediment, silt, and rust
  • Herbicides and pesticides
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Industrial and chemical pollutants (SOCs)
  • Heavy metals
  • PFAS, PFOA, and PFOS (“forever chemicals”)
  • Pharmaceuticals and chlorine

Gravity draws the water slowly through the filter for maximum contact time, enhancing adsorption and ensuring deeper contaminant removal.

These filters do not change Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels, keeping your water’s natural mineral balance intact.

The result: cleaner, fresher, safer water with every pour.

FAQ for Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements

Q: What materials are used to make the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements?

A: Each element is composed of a proprietary blend that includes high-grade CTC 60 coconut shell activated carbon. The carbon is heated to precise, high temperatures in a controlled environment, forming millions of microscopic pores.

This process dramatically increases the carbon’s surface area, allowing it to capture and retain a wide variety of contaminants efficiently. The media is then compressed and sintered at high temperatures to form a dense yet highly porous block—delivering exceptional filtration performance and steady water flow.

Q: How do Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements purify water?

A: These filter elements utilize a tightly packed matrix filled with millions of tiny pores. As water moves through this micro-porous structure, impurities such as rust, sediment, and silt are trapped within—this is known as microfiltration.

Additionally, the activated carbon’s natural adsorption properties bind to a broad spectrum of organic and chemical contaminants, including VOCs, PFAS (PFOA and PFOS), industrial solvents, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and chlorine.

Heavy metals are also reduced through this process. Because filtration happens by gravity, the water remains in contact with the filter media for a longer time, improving contaminant removal and enhancing taste and odor.

Q: Are Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements NSF certified?

A: Yes. These filters are tested and certified to meet NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 standards.

Q: Do these filters contain animal byproducts, lead, BPA, BPS, calcium carbonate, or aluminum?

A: No. Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements are completely free of animal-based materials, heavy metals, BPA, BPS, aluminum, or calcium carbonate. Every component complies with NSF drinking water safety standards.

Q: Will Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements remove beneficial minerals or electrolytes?

A: No. These filters do not strip your water of naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium. The filtration process leaves healthy minerals intact and does not alter the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) value, meaning your water retains its natural balance and taste.

Q: Do Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements reduce fluoride? Can they be used with Berkey PF-2® Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements?

A: Independent lab testing indicates that Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements can initially reduce fluoride levels by up to 75.5%. However, the fluoride-reduction capability of carbon-based media naturally decreases over time.

For consistent long-term fluoride reduction, these filters are compatible with Berkey PF-2® Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements, extending fluoride reduction performance to approximately 1,000 gallons.

Q: Do Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements reduce “forever chemicals” like PFAS?

A: Yes. Verified third-party testing confirms that the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements significantly reduce PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS.

Q: Are these filters effective against chlorine?

A: Yes. The Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements are highly efficient at removing chlorine and over 200 other common tap water contaminants typically found in municipal supplies worldwide.

Q: What is the lifespan of Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements?

A: Under normal use, each set of two filters is rated for approximately 5,500 gallons (or 2,750 gallons per individual element). Actual lifespan can vary depending on the quality of your source water.

Q: What is the base of the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Element made from?

A: The base housing is constructed from a tough, glass-filled polymer that is BPA-free and fully NSF/FDA food-contact compliant, ensuring long-term durability and safety.

Q: Do these filters soften water or reduce hardness?

A: No. Like most activated carbon filters, Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements do not alter water hardness or remove limescale.

Q: Can these filters be used with softened water?

A: It’s not recommended. Water softeners introduce mineral salts that can clog filter pores and diminish absorption performance. Using softened water with these filters—or with Black Berkey® Elements—can shorten filter life and void the warranty. For best results, always use untreated or pre-filtered water that hasn’t been softened.

Q: What is the flow rate of Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements?

A: When the upper chamber is filled to the top, a pair of Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements can produce up to 4.2 gallons per hour. Flow rate naturally decreases as the water level drops. Systems with larger reservoirs, like the Imperial Berkey® or Crown Berkey™, achieve even faster flow rates.

Q: How should I clean the Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements?

A: If you notice a slowdown in flow or visible buildup, follow these steps to restore performance:

  1. Remove the filter elements from the upper chamber.
  2. Under cold running water, gently scrub each element using a stiff brush or a Scotch-Brite® pad. Do not use soap or cleaning agents.
  3. Re-prime the elements as directed in your instruction sheet.
  4. Reinstall them in your gravity system and run a red food coloring test to verify proper sealing and assembly.

Q: Can I perform the red food coloring test with these filters?

A: Yes. The test procedure is identical to the one used for Black Berkey® Elements. Refer to the instruction manual included with your Phoenix Gravity Filters for detailed steps.

Q: What is the recommended way to store the filters, and what is their shelf life?

A: Unused filters can be stored indefinitely. For filters that have already been used, ensure they are completely dried before long-term storage. Shake off excess moisture, then air-dry for 1 to 3 days in a warm, well-ventilated area until they’re bone-dry.

Once dry, seal each element in an airtight plastic bag to prevent odor absorption. When ready to reuse, scrub the exterior under cold running water, re-prime, and reinstall in your system.
