Big Berkey® Water Filter - 2.25 Gallon Gravity-Fed Filtration System
Big Berkey® Water Filter – Our Most Popular Countertop System
The Big Berkey® Water Filter is a durable, countertop gravity-fed filtration system designed for everyday household use. Its 2.25-gallon capacity, polished stainless steel construction, and electricity-free operation make it a practical choice for individuals, couples, and families of up to four people.
Simply fill the upper chamber with tap water and allow gravity to move the water through the included Black Berkey® Elements. Filtered water collects in the lower chamber and is dispensed through the spigot—without plumbing connections, electricity, or complicated installation.
Due to state-specific regulations, this product cannot currently be shipped to addresses in California or Iowa.

For many households, the Big Berkey® offers the ideal balance between countertop size, water capacity, filtration output, and long-term value.
Designed for Everyday Drinking Water
With a capacity of 2.25 gallons, the Big Berkey® is large enough to support regular household drinking water needs while remaining compact enough for most kitchen counters.
It is commonly used for drinking water, cooking, coffee, tea, reusable water bottles, and other everyday needs. Many owners place the system near the kitchen sink to make refilling the upper chamber more convenient.
The system measures approximately 8.5 inches in diameter and 19.25 inches tall when assembled. Before ordering, measure the intended countertop space and allow sufficient clearance above the system to remove the lid and fill the upper chamber.
Includes Two Black Berkey® Elements
Each Big Berkey® system comes standard with two authentic Black Berkey® Elements. The system can accommodate up to four elements.
Black Berkey® Elements are designed to reduce a broad range of substances that may affect drinking water quality, taste, or odor, including:
- Chlorine and chloramines
- Lead, mercury, and other heavy metals
- Volatile organic compounds
- Pharmaceutical residues
- Petroleum-related contaminants
- Rust, silt, and sediment
- Selected radiological contaminants
- Unpleasant tastes and odors
The elements are also designed to leave naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium in the filtered water.
Each Black Berkey® Element is rated for approximately 3,000 gallons under typical conditions. A two-element configuration provides an estimated total filter capacity of approximately 6,000 gallons before replacement is recommended.
Actual filter life can vary depending on source-water quality, usage, maintenance, and the types and concentrations of substances present in the water.
Expandable Filtration Capacity
The Big Berkey® includes two Black Berkey® Elements but can be expanded to four elements. Adding more elements can increase the rate at which water moves from the upper chamber into the lower chamber.
- Two elements: Up to approximately 3.5 gallons per hour
- Four elements: Up to approximately 7 gallons per hour
Flow-rate estimates are measured with the upper chamber full. The filtration rate naturally slows as the water level and pressure in the upper chamber decrease.
For best performance, refill the upper chamber before it becomes completely empty whenever there is sufficient room in the lower chamber.
Optional PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Filters
Customers who want additional fluoride and arsenic reduction may add optional PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Filters.
PF-2™ filters attach to the stems of the Black Berkey® Elements inside the lower chamber. One PF-2™ filter is required for each installed Black Berkey® Element.
- Two Black Berkey® Elements require two PF-2™ filters
- Four Black Berkey® Elements require four PF-2™ filters
PF-2™ filters are optional accessories and are not included with the standard Big Berkey® system.
Durable Stainless Steel Construction
The upper and lower chambers are constructed from highly polished AISI 304 stainless steel. This material provides a durable, non-reactive surface and a clean appearance that fits easily into most kitchens.
The stainless steel chambers are assembled in the United States using domestic and imported parts. Black Berkey® Elements are made and assembled in the United States.
The upper chamber nests inside the lower chamber when the system is disassembled, reducing its overall height for storage or transportation.

Cleaning and Maintenance
The stainless steel chambers should be washed periodically with mild dish soap and warm water. Avoid abrasive cleaners that may damage the polished finish.
If the filtration rate becomes noticeably slower, the exterior surface of each Black Berkey® Element can be gently cleaned under cool running water using a new Scotch-Brite®-type pad reserved exclusively for filter maintenance.
Do not use soap or detergent directly on the Black Berkey® Elements.
After cleaning, reprime the elements if necessary and reinstall them according to the product instructions. When cleaning no longer restores normal performance, replacement may be appropriate.
Visit our Berkey Replacement Filters Guide to find compatible replacement elements.
Optional Water View™ Spigot
The standard system includes a basic spigot. For easier water-level monitoring, consider upgrading to the 7-inch Berkey Water View™ Stainless Steel Spigot.
The sight-glass design lets you check the water level in the lower chamber without lifting the upper chamber. This can help prevent accidental overfilling.
Big Berkey® Compared With a Typical Filter Pitcher
| Feature | Big Berkey® | Typical Filter Pitcher |

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can the Big Berkey® serve?
The Big Berkey® is generally recommended for approximately 1–4 people under typical daily household use. Actual suitability depends on how much filtered water the household consumes for drinking, cooking, coffee, tea, and other uses.
How often should Black Berkey® Elements be replaced?
Each Black Berkey® Element is rated for approximately 3,000 gallons. With two elements installed, the estimated combined capacity is approximately 6,000 gallons.
Replacement timing varies according to water quality, usage, cleaning frequency, and the substances present in the source water.
How do I know when the elements need to be replaced?
A persistent reduction in flow that cannot be restored through proper cleaning may indicate that the elements are approaching the end of their useful service life.
Filter capacity should also be tracked based on estimated water usage rather than relying only on flow rate.
Does the Big Berkey® require electricity?
No. The Big Berkey® uses gravity to move water through the filter elements. It does not require electricity, batteries, water pressure, or a plumbing connection.
Does the Big Berkey® reduce fluoride?
Additional fluoride reduction requires optional PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Filters. These attach beneath the Black Berkey® Elements in the lower chamber.
Can I add more Black Berkey® Elements later?
Yes. The Big Berkey® comes with two Black Berkey® Elements and can accommodate up to four. Additional elements may be installed later to increase the filtration flow rate.
How fast does the Big Berkey® filter water?
Estimated maximum flow is up to approximately 3.5 gallons per hour with two elements or 7 gallons per hour with four elements.
These estimates are based on a full upper chamber. Flow decreases as the water level in the upper chamber drops.
Can the Black Berkey® Elements be cleaned?
Yes. If flow slows, the exterior of the elements can be gently cleaned under cool running water with a new Scotch-Brite®-type pad. Do not apply soap or detergent to the elements.
Does the stainless steel affect the taste of the water?
AISI 304 stainless steel is non-reactive and is not intended to add flavor to the water. Many customers notice an improvement in taste and odor due to the filtration process.
Can I use the Big Berkey® with private well water?
The system may be used with municipal tap water or private well water. However, private well-water quality can vary considerably. Periodic laboratory testing can help identify the substances present and determine whether additional treatment is necessary.
Can I use the Big Berkey® with softened water?
Salt-softened water may affect the performance or service life of the filter elements. Review the relevant information in our Berkey® FAQ before using the system with water from a salt-based softener.
Can the Big Berkey® be shipped to California or Iowa?
No. Due to state-specific regulatory requirements, this product cannot currently be shipped to addresses in California or Iowa.
What accessories are available?
You can customize the system with compatible accessories, including Water View™ spigots, stainless steel stands, protective sleeves, replacement parts, and additional filter elements.
