How do you know when to change the filters?
That is the right time to change every 6000 gallons filtered by the Black Berkey Elements. However, determining whether you have reached the 6,000-gallon limit can sometimes be difficult and time-consuming. Another way to make this process a little more convenient is the Red Food Coloring Test.
What is the Red Food Coloring Test?
The Red Food Coloring Test is a standard procedure used to determine whether your water filters are working effectively. You can perform this test immediately after purchasing the product and after reaching the maximum capacity of filtered water using your chosen Berkey Water filtration system. This test only works for the Black Berkey elements, not other filter elements.
To proceed with this test, you must have an artificial Red Food Coloring that contains FD&C Red 40 and FD&C Red 3. There are other kinds of food coloring on the market. Still, this specific food coloring is the one most recommended for determining the accuracy of your Black Berkey Elements. Other food coloring products are highly safe for consumption, but pass through the Berkey filters easily. So, you might think that your filters are defective, but in fact, they are not.
How do you perform the Red Food Coloring Test?
The red food coloring test consists of straightforward steps. Just follow the instructions below:
- First, empty your upper or lower chamber, and remove any PF-2 filters installed.
- Next, place an empty and clean glass under each Black Berkey Element in the lower chamber.
- Now, fill up the upper chamber with water.
- For every gallon of water, put 1 teaspoon of red food coloring. So, if you poured 2 gallons of water, put 2 teaspoons of red food coloring.
- Leave it there for about 5-10 minutes.
- After that, check whether either of the glasses contains a red or pinkish mixture. The Black Berkey elements are functioning properly if the water is clear. If either or both glasses have a red or pinkish mixture, then it must be both, or the respective filter element is defective (if purchased new) or needs replacement (if already owned).
