Berkey Water Filters are highly effective and cost-effective personal gravity water filtration systems.

You pour water straight from the upper chamber of stainless steel water containers, then filtered drinking water is stored in the lower chamber, ready for drinking.

Berkey water filters require no electricity or plumbing, filter water for just cents per gallon, and are independently tested to remove 200+ contaminants — making them one of the most practical long-term filtration solutions available.

Comparison of Berkey Water to Reverse Osmosis

Based on current research, many health experts no longer recommend drinking Reverse Osmosis or Distilled water long-term. These methods strip out all the beneficial minerals from the water, making the water an acidic "hypotonic" solution.

Berkey Water Filter Systems do not remove all beneficial minerals from the water. Still, they extract harmful heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, and sedimentary minerals, including iron oxide. Therefore, the TDS reading will not typically change significantly unless there is a high concentration of heavy metals or sedimentary minerals in the source water.

When it comes to cost, it's important to consider both the initial investment and the long-term expenses. Reverse Osmosis systems, while effective, can be the most expensive option. This is due to the system's cost and the additional expense of professional installation. Why You Need Water Filters

Some older houses could have old pipes and plumbing systems that can introduce copper and other contaminants into the water supply. To Remove Fluoride From Water

We only need a small amount of the mineral fluoride. In the 1940s, fluoride started being added to public water in the United States to improve dental health. An excessive amount can be toxic, especially to children under eight.

Lead is a toxic metal that can harm human health even at low exposure levels. It is persistent and can bioaccumulate in the body over time. Lead can commonly enter your drinking water by seeping into your water supply through old plumbing pipes or the solder used to join them.

Lead can be removed from water when it passes through a reverse osmosis filter, a carbon filter, or a distillation unit, all specifically designed to remove the metal from drinking water.

If your primary water source is a well, health authorities recommend that you have the water tested at least once a year for lead or other contaminants.

Can I Use The Berkey System With Softened Water?

The Black Berkey Elements are designed to remove heavy metals but will not remove mineral salts, which are added by a water softener. The salt used to soften water will not be extracted by the Black Berkey Element. You can use one of our filtration systems regularly by bypassing your water softener to get your drinking water.

Most water softeners have a bypass valve or a way to divert water before it passes through the softener. Therefore, we highly recommend that you obtain pre-softened water directly from the source rather than run softened water through your Black Berkey Elements.
