Berkey Shower Filter
Berkey Shower Filter Reduces Damage to Hair and Skin by Removing Chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, scale, and iron oxide.
People with sensitive skin find some chemicals cause their skin to flare or itch. If any of this sounds familiar, we have the solution. A Berkey shower filter will solve these problems and do so quickly and easily.
Berkey shower filter is easy to install and is great for those who want the benefits of showering in filtered water. Simply screw this in between the shower pipe coming from your wall and your existing showerhead, and you're good to go!
Berkey Shower Filter will typically last approximately 25,000 gallons or one year, whichever comes first. Berkey Shower Filter contains a new and improved shower filtration media, which is most effective in reducing free chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, scale and iron oxide (rust water).
Berkey Shower Filter process media works in a wide range of temperatures with a maximum operating temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Beyond removing chlorine, Berkey shower filters remove many of the pollutants that can cause skin problems. With the removal of hydrogen sulfide, scale, and iron oxide, dry skin and damaging effects on hair and scalp dryness are gone.
Features of Berkey Water Filter Systems:

As you can see, the Berkey is far more than just a chlorine shower filter. Despite this, it is priced at about the same level as other filters, which remove far fewer contaminants.
In the shower environment, chlorine can either be in a liquid or gas state. At higher water temperatures in the enclosed shower stall, free chlorine moves from the liquid to the gas state, where it vaporizes and subsequently is inhaled.
The United States regulates all showerhead flow at 2.5 gallons per minute. Thus, the science behind shower filtration must take into account the unique situation in the shower, including temperature, flow rate, and volume.
Since chlorination is a long established public health practice necessary for the disinfection of drinking water, consumers are aware of the health benefits drinking filtered water can provide. However, it’s surprising for some people to learn that 50% of their daily exposure is in the shower. The other 50% comes from their drinking water. Therefore, filtering shower water is equally as important as filtering drinking water.
Documented scientific studies conclude that taking long hot showers is a potential health risk. In the enclosed shower stall, chlorine vaporizes where it is inhaled. To a lesser degree, dermal absorption also occurs. Chlorine is added to kill pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria.
The highly reactive chlorine combines with fatty acids and carbon fragments to form a variety of toxic compounds. Medical studies suggest a link between absorption and inhalation of chlorine in the shower environment with elevated risks for diseases and serious illness.
Showering in chlorinated water may also cause pre-existing conditions such as asthma and eczema, to become exacerbated. In addition to the benefits of filtering water, there are cosmetic benefits. Symptoms of chlorine exposure are dry and flaking skin, dry, brittle hair and irritated red eyes. Filtering your shower water reduces these symptoms.
Using a patented blend of high-purity Calcium Sulfide, Copper and Zinc; the Berkey Shower Filter unit works on a similar principle to a Catalytic Converter in an automobile.
In shower filtration free-chlorine is converted into a harmless chloride salt. The scientific name for this chemical reaction is known as “Reduction-Oxidation,” commonly referred to as Redox. Redox reactions can be chemically complex.
Simply stated, during a Redox reaction electrons are transferred between molecules, creating new elements. For instance, when free-chlorine comes in contact with the filtration media, it is changed into a benign water-soluble chloride.
This reaction changes free-chlorine to a larger chloride molecule. This is too large to evaporate or be absorbed by the skin. It is then carried harmlessly through the water supply.
This salt-based molecule requires more energy (heat) to evaporate than a water heater at industry-standard maximum temperatures allow and is too large to be absorbed by the skin. It is then carried harmlessly through the water supply.
The media used in the Berkey Shower Filter converts free chlorine and some combined chlorine to a harmless chloride salt. The media, a proprietary blend of Cooper, Zinc, and Calcium Sulfide works well in a variety of temperatures from hot to cold.
We've been using Berkey products for 10 years. I can't imagine life without them. The shower head is a trusted companion to helping us remove toxins that would be going directly to our skin.
I love my Berkley shower filter...It massages my neck so well. When I come out of the shower, I know I have showered with good clean water..My itching skin has stopped, love it!!!!
Loved mine so much that I bought two more as Christmas presents to both of my daughters! First of all I love how there is no longer a chlorine smell in the shower. You just breathe easier. Both my skin and hair feel soft and not so dried out. The shower head has a great message for your shoulders and neck where I feel stress and tension at times. Don’t wait for years like I did! Treat yourself! It is worth it!
We've been living with hard water for the past 5+ years in our current home. My hair was becoming increasingly dry & coarse feeling and I suspected the water quality was a factor. I'd looked into other shower filters, but was afraid the flow rate would be reduced and my hair is very thick so I rely on good pressure. After installing the Berkey shower head filter, I discerned NO drop in pressure (we used it with our original shower head) and my hair was SO soft and silky after that very first shampoo! I use less product (shampoo/soap) with the Berkey-filtered water, too. We installed the massage shower head in our guest bath, and our college-aged sons have reported favorably after using it. Great purchase!
I love the Berkey shower filter. It was easy to install. We have very hard water which was ruining my hair. After installing the filter, my hair is much softer. I also like the water pressure-much better than our previous shower head.
